CINCINNATI (WXIX) – Hamilton County health officials are issuing a public health alert about elevated levels of fentanyl in 16 overdose-causing drugs in just a few days.

From Sept. 30 to Oct. 5, Hamilton County Public Health said there were “unusual changes in activities associated with excessive drinking.”

In that six-day period, health officials said there were 16 premature overdose deaths.

According to Hamilton County Public Health’s public health alert message, there were 10 overdose emergency room visits on Oct. 4 and nine more the next day.

Below are the warnings listed by health authorities:

  • Even if they are recreational drug users, they are at risk of overdose and death.
  • Narcan exists and is not only prescribed for injection drug users.
  • Fentanyl may be in your medicine supply! Drugs like cocaine, crack cocaine, and methamphetamine contain fentanyl, which can cause overdose and death. A high supply of fentanyl puts all users at risk. We’ve seen more deaths in people using drugs other than opioids.
  • If you need Narcan, safe monitoring supplies or fentanyl test strips, please call 513-316-7725 or visit: https://www.flowcode.com/page/harmreduction
  • If you or someone you know overdoses, you should still call 911 — even if you administer Narcan.
  • In situations involving multiple individuals using drugs, ensure that someone is available to administer Narcan.
  • Medical providers are opening up and offering services in many new ways. Please call 513-281-7880 if you need assistance.

Hamilton County is urging public health providers and first responders to make adjustments based on the alert.
