VERMILLION, Ohio – A Northeast Ohio native is in the international spotlight for his amazing fashion designs and revolutionary styling skills.

Curtis Cassel is scoring big on Amazon Prime Video’s reality competition “The Cut,” giving it all a big shout out to his hometown of Vermilion.

“My favorite messages are just, hey, keep doing you. I love this. It’s inspiring, you know?” said Cassell.

Vermilion High School graduates’ designs are receiving widespread acclaim.

As a season three contestant on Amazon Prime Video’s “Making the Cut,” the Vermillion High School graduate’s creativity and talent stood out among ten designers from around the world.

All are vying for a cool prize of $1 million and a mentorship with Amazon Fashion.

Every part you design looks like a challenge.

The looks will be judged by an all-star panel including Heidi Klum, Nicole Richie and Jeremy Scott.

After each fashion show – the accessible look of the winner will be available in the Amazon store with additional colors and matching pieces.

“The main thing that Tim and Heidi wanted to do with this new show was to create a direct connection between the viewer and the user and the designer,” Cassel said.

A once in a lifetime opportunity didn’t happen overnight.

Cassel applied for the event on a whim, with her friend’s encouragement.

After years of running as a caterer, he noticed a clear gap when it came to wedding attire.

He wanted to change the landscape and include his voice for the LGBTQIA+ community.

“I was doing a lot of weddings, and that’s when I realized, wow, a wedding ceremony is really binary. It’s literally a black dress and a white dress. There’s nothing in between.”

That’s when the Illinois Institute of Art-Chicago interior architecture graduate’s clothing line “Queera” was born.

Castle described the colored gray clothes falling between them.

The slogan suits your body, not your gender.

He says it’s a binary clothing label that isn’t for everyone — they want to look and feel like their true selves.

“It was very important to me not to create gendered clothes, but to create unique clothes that you can work into your own closet and wear whatever you want.”

Cassell says the show has started to change his life, but his heart and family are still in Vermilion, Ohio, with his mother, father, brother Chris and both sets of grandparents.

“That was really fun. It represented my state and my hometown, you know, Little Vermillion, you know, Harbor City on the lake.”

While his family humbled him, he says he will never forget the moment supermodel and host Heidi Klum gave him a standing ovation.

“What you don’t see in the first episode – Heidi Klum is criticizing me, and she says: Oh, by the way, you’re very beautiful. And yes, Caliente. And I want to melt.”

Making the Cut is streaming now on Amazon Prime Video.
