Houghton, Mich – The Michigan Tech women’s soccer team returns to Houghton for the first home weekend of the GLIAC tournament. On Friday, the Huskies host Saginaw Valley at 7 p.m., with a Sunday afternoon contest against Ferris State.
Fans can catch both games on FloSports as part of a four-year media partnership with the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference that began this fall.
About the Cardinals
Saginaw Valley State is 3-2-1 and 1-1-0 in conference play in week one of GLIAC contests. Last weekend, the Cardinals beat Davenport (2-1) on Friday (Sept. 9) afternoon before falling to No. 3 Grand Valley State (3-2) on Sunday (Sept. 11).
Jensen Taylor had both assists in a 2-1 win over Davenport, with the goals coming from Riley Garbarth and Stephanie Strong. Goalkeeper Kennedy Pugh made one save in the contest.
Lainey Garbarth made six saves in net for the Cardinals as Riley Garbarth and Maddie Bagis scored goals in a 3-2 loss to Grand Valley State on Sunday.
Freshman midfielder Riley Garbarth leads the Cardinals with two goals this season, both coming last weekend. Stephanie Strong has two assists to her name in six contests.
About the Bulldogs
Ferris State enters week two of GLIAC play. Most recently, the Bulldogs tied the game with a 0-0 tie against No. 3 Grand Valley State on Friday (Sept. 9). The same result came in Sunday’s tilt (Sept. 11) against Davenport, with the Bulldogs and Panthers tied 1-1.
Against Grand Valley State, sophomore goalkeeper Daria Moseley earned her 14th career shutout and made three saves in the game. Kathy Nestico led the Bulldogs offensively, hitting four of the Bulldogs’ five shots.
Peyton Price scored for Ferris State in the 21st minute.
Senior forward Isabella Zamborini leads the Bulldogs with two goals on the season. Mosallaei, mentioned above, has logged 450 minutes in net for Ferris State, including two shutouts this season with a .778 save percentage.
About Huskies
Michigan Tech finished the first weekend of conference clashes with wins over Purdue Northwest (2-1) on Friday (Sept. 9) and Sunday (Sept. 11) in a rainout at Parkside (2-1). . Overall, the Black and Gold have a 3-3-0 record in the GLIAC with a 1-1-0 record.
In Friday’s win against the Pride, senior Nev Badalow and freshman Alivia Sanom both netted their second goals of the year. Senior Stephanie Yeager starred in both games, getting an assist on both goals, giving Badalou the ball on the right side and heading in a corner kick.
Yeager was the lone scorer for Michigan Tech in Sunday’s skid at Parkside, scoring on a free kick in the 62nd minute.
As has been the case this season, in both contests last weekend, the Huskies held the advantage in shots and corner kicks. MTU had 18 shots and eight corner kicks in the Parkade contest against Purdue Northwest with 11 shots and five corner kicks.
Senior goalie Gracie Vanlangevelde has made two appearances with 15 saves in six games and a 2.50 save average.
One last thing
The Huskies are second in the conference in both shots per game (17.50) and shots on goal (8.83).
Jordan Noble leads the Black and Gold with 13 hits and seven targets with a .538 SOG percentage.
