To support nursing workforce development in Appalachia, the Sisters of Health Foundation has awarded Washington State Community College a $50,000 grant. With a critical shortage of nurses, especially in this region, WSCC is expanding its nursing programs to support more students than ever before.
In addition to doubling enrollment in the associate degree nursing (ADN) program, the college, which received state approval in the spring, plans to offer a bachelor of science in nursing (BSN) degree, opening its advanced degree program in 2023.
“Our efforts are focused on serving the workforce needs of this community, and the need for skilled nurses in our community currently exceeds the local supply.” WSCC President Dr Vicky Wood explained. “Funding from the Women’s Health Foundation will help us provide the Mid-Ohio Valley with well-trained, highly skilled nurses. Thank you Sister Molly, Renee and Shay for believing in the mission of WSCC and sharing our vision to strengthen this community.
Funding from the Sister Health Foundation will be used over two years to expand WSCC’s nursing faculty and success coaching team for additional ADN and new BSN cohorts.
Accredited by the Ohio Board of Nursing, Washington State’s nursing program has a history of excellence in nursing education. The program has consistently maintained above-average pass rates and was recently ranked first among all nursing programs in Ohio and second in the Midwest region.
The Associate Degree Nursing (RN) program in Washington State currently has a 100% pass rate for the National Council Licensure Examination for Registered Nurses (NCLEX-RN).
This is above the national average of 17% and the state average of nearly 21%. Students can now enroll in this nursing program twice a year: August (early fall) and January (early spring).
“Washington State Community College operates a top-notch, growing nursing program.” Sister Health Foundation Executive Director Renee Steffen said. “We are pleased to provide funding for an additional Success Coach so that nursing students can have support at every stage of their educational experience.”
Washington State Community College offers several avenues for individuals to begin or advance their nursing careers. For example, the Educational Advancement to Registered Nurse (EARN) pathway is designed to allow adult students to work three days a week in the health care industry and attend courses two days a week while pursuing an associate degree in nursing.
Admission is based on high school or college GPA, ACT or TEAS scores, references, and completion of program prerequisites. All students on various pathways can connect with a Nursing Success Coach to improve their chances for course and program completion.
