Venus Williams underlined the importance of therapy, thinking that it is best to work with a therapist before facing certain issues in life. “Before you can really talk about something, it’s really important to engage in therapy and prepare yourself for whatever comes your way in life,” Williams told People magazine.

Williams, a seven-time Grand Slam champion, said her mother, Oracene Price, used to tell her that working on her mental strength was key. “You don’t always have to wait until you have problems,” Williams added.

“My mother always told us that – you have to work on your mental strength. That was her concept of raising children, you have to help them to be mentally prepared and ready.” Williams and fellow American players Taylor Fritz and Francis Tiafoe teamed up with online counseling service BetterHelp to donate up to $3 million worth of free mental health treatment.

Knowing the importance of good mental health, Williams is happy to be a part of this great initiative.

“I’m really excited to be a part of that and give people opportunities to work out and improve their mental health,” Williams said.

In the past year and a half, more players are openly discussing their issues with mental health. In the world of tennis, Naomi Osaka was the first to speak about her story. Osaka’s case has inspired not only tennis but other athletes to open up and share their experiences.

“We’re supposed to be indestructible, invincible, super strong, like superheroes. But if athletes share their stories, it helps people from all walks of life. That’s really important,” Williams said.
