UVA students participating in the Tech Talent Retention Initiative

Charlottesville, Va. (WVIR) – Governor Glenn Youngkin recently announced $1.2 million in grants and growth opportunities for Virginia. One of the projects to receive funding is the Tech Talent Retention Initiative, which is already underway.

TTRI is part of the Central Virginia Partnership for Economic Development, and partners with a variety of partners to help college graduates start their careers in Region 9.

“It’s really about making sure the students know what’s going on, what companies are out there, what opportunities are out there, and making sure businesses have a way to connect with the students and build that relationship so we can stop. According to Mary Kay Campbell, Director of Tech Talent Retention.

The team is currently made up of three UVA work study students. They hope to expand to include students from Germany and Piedmont Virginia community colleges.

“They come out with these technology degrees, and a lot of them leave the area, and we call it a brain drain. And this is a gift to help those students stay with entry-level companies in our region,” Campbell said.

The initiative was launched on September 14, and since then, they have held many individual and collaborative meetings.

“It was an opportunity to really come together and talk about what does this look like? Where do we want to go with it? What’s the best way to reach the students? I developed a strategic communications plan for how to reach the businesses,” Campbell said.

She says they are working to create a bridge between companies and students.

“We’re in the process of planning and strategizing how we can plan some events and how we can reach our target audience, which means, you know, students looking for full-time opportunities,” said UVA Student Business Ambassador Jagjit Singh.

Jagjit said he didn’t know what to expect when he moved from New Jersey to Charlottesville.

“I wanted to make more of an impact where I wanted to see the impact of my work,” he said. “I felt this would be a good opportunity.”

They want to involve the school’s career center, professors, clubs and organizations for better student services.
