On June 24, the United States Supreme Court overturned nearly 50 years of national precedent, striking down the constitutional right to abortion.
The decision to overturn Roe v. Wade gave individuals the power to make their own laws regarding abortion, with nearly half of US states expected to ban or restrict abortion. North Carolina is one of the only Southern states to have abortions. Still legal – Up to 20 weeks of pregnancy.
For many, abortion is an issue with medical, financial, and legal implications.
Here is a list of abortion and reproductive health care resources in the state:
Local clinics and facilities
Planned Parenthood South Atlantic
Planned Parenthood provides affordable abortion services, birth control, emergency contraception, sexually transmitted infection care, pregnancy testing and counseling, and other sexual and reproductive health services. Care is available in person or telehealth.
In Chapel Hill, Planned Parenthood has options for in-clinic or medical abortions up to 19.6 weeks.

Women’s Choice offers confidential abortion care at home or in a clinic up to 19.6 weeks. The clinic offers private ultrasound appointments, emergency contraception, pregnancy testing, birth control options, genital and HIV testing, and other reproductive health services.

Orange County Health Department
OCHD offers family planning services at its clinics in Chapel Hill and Hillsboro. Services are confidential and by appointment. The medical clinics offer free pregnancy tests, as well as advice on birth control methods and STD prevention. Individuals use birth control methods or prescription medications, including intrauterine devices (IUDs), Nexapro, and birth control pills.

Gynecology at UNC Campus Health
The Gynecology Clinic at UNC Campus Health offers contraception, IUDs and Nexplanon placement and removal, pregnancy testing, counseling and more by appointment.

SHAC is the nation’s oldest student-run free clinic. The coalition helps provide free health care and services to uninsured and underinsured community members in Carrboro, Chapel Hill and Durham. The clinic does not offer free birth control in their clinic, but can assist patients in the process of birth control free of charge. Affordable gynecology, sexual health counseling and HIV/STD testing options are also available.

Pregnancy centers
In Raleigh, Durham and Chapel Hill, Gateway Friends Care is a pregnancy center that offers pregnancy testing, ultrasounds, prenatal counseling and STD testing. It’s free and confidential. On its website, the organization says it wants pregnant people around the Triangle to “choose life.” The organization does not offer abortions or abortions.

Pregnancy Support Services is a Christian non-profit serving people in Durham and Chapel Hill. The organization offers confidential pregnancy testing and limited, first-month free ultrasounds, as well as post-abortion care – but PSS does not offer abortions or abortions. PSS can provide new parents with diapers and wipes, formula and baby clothes.

The virtual clinic offers FDA approved medication abortions within 1-5 business days. No appointment or in-person visit is required and financial aid is available.
Financial support
The Carolina Abortion Fund supports individuals with the financial and logistical aspects of obtaining an abortion. The fund operates a secure and confidential hotline: (855) 518-4603.
The hotline is only open on Mondays, and the fund returns calls within 48 hours. Callers must make an appointment to receive financial assistance.
National Network of Abortion Funds They can also help individuals find abortion funds in their area. The Abortion Fund provides financial assistance, travel, accommodation and other financial support to individuals who need it.
Legal aid
The Helpline is a free legal service that helps people understand their legal rights if they live in a state that prohibits or prohibits abortion. Repro Legal Helpline has information about the law and can order abortion pills online. The line can be reached at (844) 868-2812.
Run by the Carolina Abortion Fund, Text Abby is a free text line that helps pregnant women under 18 get a miscarriage of justice. North Carolina allows abortions for those under 18 without parental involvement. The service is free and confidential.
