On Saturday night, Hollywood’s biggest stars gathered on a large white carpet outside the Renzo Piano-themed Academy Museum in Los Angeles. The best of the Academy turned out to support the night’s honorees, with Julia Roberts receiving the Icon Award and Tilda Swinton receiving the Visionary Award. Guests of honor are joined by director and other honorees Steve McQueen and producer Mickey Lee, who will receive the Vantage and Pillar Awards. Co-chairs Halle Berry, Lupita Nyong’o and producers Ryan Murphy and Jason Bloom round out the host committee, including George and Amal Clooney, Jessica Chastain and Regina Hall.
It’s only the second year for the star-studded gala, but the event lays claim to being the largest gathering of A-listers and fashion intersections in LA outside of the usual awards show circuit. That can be a testament to Gala Creative Director Lisa Love. Vogue’The former West Coast director, after 28 years with the magazine, no doubt has a clear roadmap for creating the so-called West Coast Met Gala.
As a nice balance to the overly stylized Met, the Academy Museum Gala (with a simple black-tie dress code) offered more subdued, classic Hollywood red carpet fashion, from runways and rare archives. Here, every ensemble of your favorite celebrities is dressed up for this celebration of cinema and history.
