Houghton, Mich. (WLUC) – Michigan Tech University’s Center for Diversity and Inclusion remembers the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
More than a dozen students, faculty and community members celebrated the 34th Martin Luther King Jr. Day. The event included a prayer ceremony from various campus religious communities and a peaceful demonstration throughout the campus.
“Faculty, community representatives, faith-based leaders are joining us, setting aside our differences to come together and reflect on our strengths as a community. It means honoring Dr. King,” said MTU Dean of Students Wallace Southerland.
Southerland said it’s important for students to learn about King.
They can determine their role in society to promote justice, kindness and decency. “To fight racism, sexism, ableism and other ‘isms’ that divide us as a society,” Southerland said.
Event attendees also reflected on student artwork inspired by MLK. Student Cole Bennett said he was impressed with the diversity of the work.
“Seeing what my fellow students presented, especially some of Dr. King’s quotes from his lifetime, was very powerful. It really gives you a lot of insight into how much Dr. King cared about improving the world around him,” Bennett said.
In fact, Bennett’s fraternity motto fits King’s legacy.
“We are Delta Upsilon, and we get our two letters from our master Dikaia Apotheke, which means justice, in our Greek roots. I think most people would agree that Dr. King was instrumental in many of the justice wars of the last century,” Bennett said.
Southerland also said King will continue to play an important role on campus throughout the school year.
