A colder month has spurred business as restaurants continue to struggle with the effects of the pandemic, inflation and labor shortages.

NEW ORLEANS (WVUE) – New Orleans restaurant owners say they’re still recovering from the pandemic, but events like Culinary Month help businesses by encouraging locals to dine out during the low summer months.

Diners looking for a bargain at Atchafalaya Restaurant downtown are happy to welcome you.

“Really, it’s a benefit not only to Atchafalaya, but to New Orleans, to the residents who know it,” said general manager Jeremy Gulede.

He said the summer months are typically the slowest for the restaurant. It’s hot and people tend to stay indoors or not travel to New Orleans in the summer. Cold months help bring people to the table by offering custom menus for lunch and dinner, offering multiple courses at special prices.

“Keeping the lights on is a priority for us, so we appreciate that,” Guldge said.

It wasn’t easy. Owner Rachel Jaffe Tocco said they are still dealing with the impact of the pandemic on supply chain issues and labor shortages.

“We put out an ad, we get a lot of people interested, we call them for interviews and maybe they don’t show up,” she said. “Or they show up, show up multiple times for interviews and then don’t show up for the first shift. It’s crazy.”

I believe more local residents will benefit from the restaurant deals.

“It’s been a tough time for us restaurants, so Culinary is an opportunity to give restaurants an extra boost,” said Kelly Schulz with New Orleans & Company.

Denny’s Seafood Downtown is also recovering, a year after the height of the epidemic and Hurricane Ida.

“The post-COVID world is a whole different animal,” said owner Chandra Chifichi.

In addition to being short staffed, she is dealing with inflation and supply issues that are keeping her from being open seven days a week.

“The biggest issue since Ida and still going is oysters. That’s the biggest hurdle in the state. The price went up and it hasn’t gone back,” Chifichi said. “It’s been great, I mean it’s a nice little spark for August because everyone around here is going back to school and it gives people an incentive to get out.

Cold Month offers dining deals at over 86 restaurants across the city until August 31st.
