JACKSON, MI – Her training in classical dance opened Peyton Lauder’s eyes to what women go through with body image.

“Seeing myself in clothes that made me look naked every day caused a really bad body image,” she says. “I started talking to some of the girls around me and noticed they were doing the same thing. So that’s when we decided to have a therapist come and talk to all the girls.

Loder, 18, of Jackson, was inspired by the experience to become a women’s and mental health advocate. In the year After winning the Miss Jackson Crossroads Scholarship Pageant on Aug. 6, it’s a platform she’ll take with her when she competes for the Miss Michigan title in June 2023.

Winning the Miss Jackson Crossroads pageant was a happy shock, said Loder, daughter of Tracy and Shannon Loder of Jackson and a recent graduate of Ann Arbor Pioneer High School, where her father is the principal.

“After the shock wore off, everything I’d worked for was coming true,” Loder said.

Shows and performances were a part of much of Lauder’s life. She was the winner of the Miss Michigan Princess Program and in 2018 she won the Outstanding Teen Scholarship Competition.

“(Pageants) really affected me. I started developing my interviewing skills and got my community service together and eventually fell in love with social impact initiatives, eating disorders and educational networking,” Loder said.

When she decided to run for the Miss Jackson Crossroads pageant, Loder said ADN was an important reason to focus on as she strives to create a safe space for women.

One of Lauder’s biggest inspirations is her mother, who is a psychologist and owner, she said Healing Space LLC in Jackson. She said her mother’s care for others’ mental health influenced her to help others.

“Mental health is so important right now, and I think they’re recognizing that and giving people the help they need,” Loder said.

Another way Loder helps women is through her PJ IC closetShe said she rents dresses for people who can’t afford a dress for a one-night event.

“They just want something beautiful and good quality for one night and that’s what I do. I provide that service,” Loder said.

Loder plans to attend Jackson College in the fall to pursue a business degree. She said she hopes to venture into fashion to open her own clothing store to continue these services.

Throughout her life, Lauder was active in theater, singing, and classical music. She knows preparing for the Miss Michigan Pageant will take a lot of work, but she says she’s ready for the challenge.

“It’s going to be a long process, but I’m looking forward to it,” she said.
