BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WBRC) – The search continues for who killed a popular Birmingham business owner last weekend. We were told that 29-year-old Cedric Mahaffey was also very involved in church services.
Those who know Mahaffey say he can shine like no other.
“A fun, loving person. He would hold the conversation in a group of people and he was just a great person to be around. You have messengers like that and Cedric was supportive and he was loving, kind and generous,” said Alton Hardy, pastor at Urban Hope Community Church in Fairfield.
Mahaffey was known for his jewelry business in Birmingham, selling “Golds by Ced” grills. According to his friend, Pastor Hardy, he was giving advice to the younger generation.
“Sed was part of what we call rebuilding Fairfield through marriage, family and men being good fathers, good husbands. He talked about this on his social media. He talked about that separately when he met young men. He always pointed them in the right direction,” Hardy said.
Hardy did not believe what happened to Mahaffey after police said he was found shot to death in the front room of a home off Francis Place Southwest over the weekend.
“I’m still numb. I met him on Thursday. He came here and we went to the Purple Onion in Hueytown and hung out for about two and a half hours. We cried. We prayed. We talked about life, family and marriage,” Hardy said.
Hardy feels that Mahaffey is trying to make a big difference in the community before his life is lost. He left a big hole in the hearts of those who knew him.
“It’s going to be hard shoes to fill. It’s not that God can’t do it. He made a huge impact on his friends, east, west, south and north. He was loved,” Hardy said.
Pastor Hardy said Mehaffey was an active member of the church and even had a goal of becoming a pastor one day.
Hardy’s message to those who have done this: There is a better way. He is praying for you to submit yourself.
