GREENVILLE, NC (WITN) – The way most workdays look like has changed a lot in the past few years. According to the US Census Bureau, new businesses created this year are 23 percent better than last year.

However, starting your own business is not easy. That’s where Better Business Bureau comes in.

“Small business has always driven America, but we see it now more than ever, especially coming out of the pandemic,” said Alyssa Parker, director of communications for the BBB.

That trend doesn’t seem to be slowing down. There is a desire to leave the U.S. Census Bureau, which has prompted nearly 5.4 million new businesses to register by 2021.

Starting a business, of course, comes with its challenges, something BBB tries to help self-starters navigate.

“Entrepreneurship is a growing thing, and a lot of people don’t know there are resources out there, and BBB, we want to provide that to them so they can get started in their careers,” Parker explained.

On Wednesday, they offered free headshots and space for professionals young and old to mingle in uptown Greenville.

“It’s a great opportunity to work with each other and get out in the community, and overall it’s a great opportunity to give back to where we live,” said Seandra Dillard, a young professional who works for the city of Greenville.

For Aaron Beatty, owner of Beatty Plumbing Company LLC in New Bern and member of BBB’s board of directors, the importance of businesses working together is clear.

“It’s hard for small businesses to get in the doors of those big businesses, but it’s great when a group of small businesses work together because we can communicate more with each other,” Beatty said.

According to data from the US Census Bureau, the number of youth institutions in the US in 2021 is the highest in a single year seen in more than 15 years.
