Quarterback Tyler Shaw and the Red Raiders put on quite a show. Tech scored 14 points on its first two drives of the game, largely due in part to Shaw’s arm.
The first touchdown of the season came on a 45-yard pass from Shaw to wideout Loic Fuongi, which capped a four-play, 94-yard drive after the Red Raiders were backed up at their own four-yard line to start the series.
Running back Tahj Brooks scored a rushing touchdown on the next drive on a 14-yard scamper down the right sideline. On those two drives, Shaw completed four of five passes for 125 yards and the only touchdown.
The third series is where something goes wrong for the show.
In what appeared to be a quarterback draw, Shaw ran to the sideline of the rushers and was tackled by several Murray State defenders. It’s unclear if this play did the damage, but Shaw wasn’t the same, completing two of four passes for just 29 yards and being replaced by Donovan Smith.
Smith immediately hit Jarrand Bradley for a 30-yard touchdown play, and on his second possession, Smith led a one-play touchdown drive with a 39-yard touchdown pass to Fuyonji.
Shaw is in street clothes with his left arm in a sling as Smith and incoming freshman Behran Morton finish the game.
We should hear more about Shaw’s injury in the post-match press conference.
Last season, after Shaw was sidelined with a broken collarbone in Week 4 against the Longhorns, Smith led the Red Raiders through their final eight games, including an Independence Bowl win over Mississippi State.
