The Covid-19 pandemic has exposed many of the challenges poor people face in accessing essential health care services. The problem is particularly acute in Alabama, where many counties are without a doctor and access to health care is extremely limited.

Our work with chronically ill patients in Alabama prisons has revealed serious deficiencies in prison health care that have long been a problem for people leaving prison. Many people who have been incarcerated in Alabama suffer from trauma, addiction, and various types of untreated chronic medical conditions.

EJI is launching a program to provide health care services to poor and low-income people in Alabama. Our program is designed to directly address some of the biggest challenges emerging from the region’s prisons.

We provide free health care services to people released from Alabama prisons and provide additional care and services to promote successful re-entry.

EGI believes that access to behavioral health services and chronic illness treatment can significantly impact the chances of successful re-entry for people released from Alabama’s dangerous and violent prisons. This will reduce recidivism and increase public safety.
