Sussex Tech High School in Georgetown recently installed new security cameras on its school buses.
The new camera system is on 33 of the school’s buses.
Sussex Tech Administrators say the reform provides a more consistent platform — one that holds the school fully accountable. But you can always review bus images.
Principal Matthew Donovan says it’s always good to improve technology whenever possible.
“We’ve also added an extra camera to the arm of the bus so when it pulls out and all the traffic has to stop nearby, it records what’s going on. So if someone breaks the arm when the bus is stopped, we can get footage.
Donovan added that he hopes the multiple cameras on each bus will deter unruly student behavior.
“We take school safety very seriously here in our buildings,” Donovan said, “and we’re constantly evaluating our technology to make sure it’s working for us. It’s the best that can give us the best images, and definitely adding arm cameras to make sure our students are safe and to hold those who drive out there accountable. And this What we feel matters.”
The cameras are operated by a real control system. There is also a passive GPS system to pinpoint the location of the incident along with information such as the speed of the bus and the time the stop arm was deployed.
The camera upgrades cost the district $94,000, with additional funds earmarked for maintenance.
