White Sox manager Tony La Russa has been on a health-related leave of absence since Aug. 30, but met with the team in person this weekend in Oakland. When Dave Stewart retired his number from the Athletics today, he was given the go-ahead by doctors to walk from his home in La Russa, Arizona.
Meeting with journalists (incl Janie McCauley of the Associated Press And Daryl Van Schuen of the Chicago Sun-Times.) Today, 77-year-old La Russa still “not sure” on whether or not he can return to the White Sox dugout.
“I don’t plan to wear a uniform until then [doctors] Say it’s time to put on the uniform” said La Russa. “Look for me at the park, I don’t know. The most important thing for me is that you don’t want to be a distraction. I don’t want to be a distraction. That’s why it’s better to let it run its course and until then [the team is] Focus on the game you are playingHe said.
The exact nature of La Russa’s medical condition is unknown, but he told Macaulay that he had a pacemaker inserted. The manager told the media that he had a heart problem during spring training and on August 30th, doctors “They had some information they needed to talk to“The problem that La Russa needs to get away from the White Sox immediately.”You’ve fixed it, now it’s a question of finding strength…. La Russa is not completely gone, saying he makes several calls to bench coach and caretaker manager Miguel Cairo every day. The Sox posted a 9-3 record in La Russa’s absence, an increase that kept Chicago in the hunt for the AL Central title and on the brink of the wild card race. Outside of three games against the Padres and four games against the division-leading relievers, the White Sox have one of the easiest remaining schedules of any team in baseball, making them a team to watch.
