LEXINGTON, Ky. (WKYT) – A Lexington family was hit by burglars not once, but twice at their local business.

The Java Jukebox on Maxwell Street was hit early Thursday morning.

Local musician Len Allen opened Java’s Jukebox Cafe and Restaurant in July with a major goal in mind.

“Louisville has a strong community around music right now and my main focus is to bring that to Lexington,” said owner Len Allen.

He wants to create an exciting environment for musicians and music lovers. But on Thursday morning, the wrong person invited themselves.

“I immediately panicked. The moment I saw the door broken, I burst into tears and said it was so disappointing.

Allen said someone broke into the register and stole $400 from it. To make matters worse, the man shut down the store’s circuit and damaged $1,500 worth of products in the refrigerator.

As frustrating as the experience was, Allen said he’s hopeful they’ll hold the man accountable, and that’s because a neighboring business caught them on surveillance video.

He said the man first arrived at 2:00 a.m. and returned around 4:00 a.m. wearing a hat and mask and a hammer in hand.

Allen says he’s dedicating 84 hours a week to his new job and can’t understand why someone would do that to him.

“Having a setback like that just ruins my motivation,” Allen said.

But he hopes to learn from it and become stronger.

“They say the worst comes before you get the most praise,” Allen said.

Allen said it’s been a difficult time for the family since his brother had a vintage cold collection stolen in August. In this case, he said, thousands of dollars in high heels were stolen.
