  • A former FBI and CIA official predicted another “catastrophic event” like January 6th.
  • Phil Mudd says threats against law enforcement are similar to those before the Capitol attack.
  • The threat escalated as Republicans protested the FBI raid on Mar-a-Lago.

A former FBI and CIA official said the fallout from the Mar-a-Lago raid was similar to the Jan. 6 attack on the Capitol — and predicted another “catastrophic incident.”

Phil Mudd, now a CNN counterterrorism analyst, previously worked for the CIA as a special analyst for South Asia and the Middle East. He later served as the first deputy director of the FBI’s National Security Branch.

Mood appeared on CNN on Sunday to talk about the FBI’s unprecedented raid on former President Donald Trump’s home. Federal officials said threats of force against law enforcement have increased following the raid. Some Republican lawmakers, including Trump, have opposed the FBI, suggesting the agency may continue to target ordinary citizens.

“When I was watching extremists overseas, I never thought we’d see this in America. We are,” Mudd said in an interview with CNN’s Jim Acosta.

“They ask leadership to tell them that what they are thinking is okay. And they need confirmation from that leadership to suggest that violence is okay,” he said.

Mood pointed to Trump’s comments this week, calling the investigation into the raid a sham and suggesting that the FBI had planted material at Mar-a-Lago without any evidence.

“The same thing that happened before January 6th is happening today,” Trump continued, referring to the rhetoric and false claims he made about the 2020 election before the uprising.

He also pointed to the armed Trump supporters who protested in front of the FBI office in Phoenix, Arizona last Saturday.

“People with AR-15s and camo say, ‘I’m going to do something about this.’ That’s dangerous. I think we’re going to see another catastrophic event,” Mudd said.

There was violence that seemed to be related to the invasion. On Thursday, a gunman attacked an FBI office in Cincinnati, Ohio. He was shot and killed in an hours-long standoff with police. The man is also believed to have been inside the Capitol on Jan. 6, a law enforcement official told The Associated Press.

Court documents unsealed Friday show the FBI recovered 11 boxes of documents from Mar-a-Lago, including classified material. The Justice Department is investigating possible violations of three laws related to the handling of government documents, including the Espionage Act.

Trump has said he has released all the documents, saying he did not do anything wrong, but has not publicly produced the documents. Presidential documents, whether classified or not, are in the public domain and are administered by law at the National Archives.
