He spoke to 175 clients Saturday morning at the Community Alliance in Omaha. Community Alliance works with people with mental health disorders.
He was scheduled to give two talks, one to clients and one open to the public at the Holland Center for the Arts. Austin’s hope is to fulfill his mission of easing his mother’s mental health.
In a chat with 6 News, he shared some vulnerable moments from his past.
“She also has panic episodes, manic episodes and periods of depression. And when she experienced those things, it was abuse, physical, psychological, emotional, verbal abuse. When she was diagnosed, she was relieved to be diagnosed because then she had an explanation, or at least a way to explain away some of her bad behavior. But our family had a lot to manage in that regard,” Astin said.
The main message he hopes to send to his audience is that you are not alone.
He said mental health should be discussed and shared.
