Bella Hadid and Copernicus combined science and fashion, and it was amazing. At Copernicus’ Paris Fashion Week show on September 29, the brand’s finale had fashionistas around the world drop their jaws in disbelief, while Bella Hadid and a few scientists blew fashion week expectations out of the water.
Bella Hadid strutted down the Copernicus runway with nothing on her face or body, officially sealing her deal as one of the most stunning supermodels of all time. While this moment was certainly career-defining, it can’t be attributed to Bella alone. In the year Scientists at Fabrican Ltd., a London-based company founded by Manuel Torres in 2003, are responsible for the phenomenon of mental retardation.
Copernicus creative director Sébastien Meier has never been shy about admitting his love for the marriage of fashion and science, so this collaboration was incredibly unexpected and made perfect sense. Bella Hadid took less than 10 minutes to walk the runway almost naked in a stunning white dress that came in nothing more than a sheer dress.
The materials used to make the dress are liquid fibers known simply as liquid fabric or ‘fabric in a can’. The fibers are held together by polymers and additives and then evaporate when they hit the surface, in this case the body of the Bella rail. Not only is this technology visually stunning, but it’s also environmentally safer than conventional textile production and is now being seen to have benefits beyond fashion lover’s delight. Instead, it is used medically for a cast or custom implant. Manel Torres’ creation was beyond magical, but the fashion week performance just put the fabric on the radar for many more potential uses; All fashionistas can hope for is that this means seeing more on the runway.
While the spray skirt has been carefully dissected and perpetuated by scientists near and far, pop culture has done nothing but eat up the experience and we loved every second of it. Fashion critics are obsessed and no one can blame them. The second Bella Hadid stepped naked on that runway, fashionistas went crazy and haven’t been quiet since.
