BOARDMAN – Michael N. Bruno, 49, pleaded guilty, asked to go to mental health court, apologized and said he was “very confused” when he was charged in Mahoning County District Court with aggravated murder. .
Bruno started as a deputy for the Mahoning County Sheriff’s Office in 1995 and became a full-time deputy in April 2000. He retired in November 2006.
On Saturday morning, when Boardman police arrived at his Leland Street home in Boardman, his father, Michael J.
A Boardman police report says Michael Bruno called 911 at 7:30 a.m. and told police he shot his father and did it because “the disease made him act.” It was not clear which illness he was talking about.
Officers arrived wearing boxer shorts, flip-flops and a polo shirt sitting on the front lawn with blood on his hands, head and shirt, the report said.
During the trial, Judge Joseph House told Bruno twice that he had something to say about his comments about mental health court and his guilty plea, as he did not answer the judge’s questions, such as whether he understood the charges against him. An assistant county attorney was recommending the bond amount.
Bruno advises him not to talk about the facts. There were no pleas or admissions to felony charges in lower courts, such as the Boardman Circuit Court, so Bruno’s plea of guilty was rejected.
Bruno appears to have no prior criminal history in Mahoning County.
Mental health
When Hauter first spoke to the defendant via video from the Mahoning County jail, Bruno asked if he understood he was charged with crimes that could carry more than 10 years in prison.
Bruno didn’t answer right away, but eventually said, “I want to go to mental health court.” But the judge told him that the case file was only looking at the first cases, saying, “We’re not there yet.” Do you understand the charges Mr. Bruno?”
“Yes,” replied Bruno.
House tells Bruno that the next hearing will be a preliminary hearing to determine if there is probable cause to commit the crime. The judge asked Bruno if he wanted this trial to be held in 10 days or sooner.
“I’m guilty,” replied Bruno.
“Well, not a guilty plea this time,” House told him.
The judge scheduled the hearing for September 27 at 11 a.m.
Bruno then testified that he needed a court-appointed attorney and only had a small amount of money. He said he was making about $300 at work in two weeks and had $600 in his bank account and no vehicles or real estate.
A Boardman police report indicated Bruno had been working as an unarmed security guard for the past two weeks.
Assistant District Attorney Kathryn Jones asked the judge to hold Bruno in lieu of $500,000 in jail due to the nature of the crime. The judge then asked Bruno if he wanted to say anything about the prosecutor’s office’s recommendation.
“I’m very saddened by what happened to Mahoning County and Trumbull County and surrounding counties,” he said. “And I just want mental health to improve my life and to work and treat people right. I am very sorry. I never thought this would happen.”
“Well, I don’t want you to get into the facts of the matter,” the judge said. “I want to know if you want to say anything else about Bond, Bond, on your behalf.”
“He was very confused,” said Bruno.
Deputies with him at the jail repeated the question and Bruno said he had nothing to say about the bond amount.
Houser set bond at $500,000.
The place where the crime was committed
The police report states that the first officer to enter the home off Matthews Road found Bruno sitting in the front yard with his cell phone. He told the officer he was not carrying a weapon. The officer ordered Bruno to put his hands on his stomach, which he did, and he was handcuffed.
Bruno says his father is the only one in the house. A detective walks in and finds Bruno’s father, the owner of the house, dead in the bedroom with multiple gunshot wounds.
When the officer asked Bruno what happened, Bruno said, “He’s been sick for at least the last week and a half and he’s had a couple of quick tests at home.”
The officer asked if he meant the covid-19 test and Bruno said yes. When asked about the gun, Bruno says, “The disease made him have a gun.” He had not been in an argument with his father before the shooting, the report said.
“So you just shot him?”
“Yes,” said Bruno.
He told the officer he had a “baby Glock” he got when he was in law enforcement and the gun he used to shoot his father.
Bruno said he had contracted Covid-19 twice and had to retire from security. “This disease is taking over America,” said Bruno. The officer took Bruno to St. Elizabeth Youngstown Hospital for treatment before he was taken into custody.
Bruno tells the officer that he hopes his father lives. He said his mother is in a nursing home. Police later contacted the mother of the elder Bruno to inform him of his death.
Officers obtained a search warrant to search the home.
According to the police report, several guns were found in the home, including a Glock pistol and several spent shell casings.
