Omar A. Brown (MBA ’07) He is on a rocket ship by serving as senior vice president and chief people and culture officer at the Big Ten Conference. Now, he’s back at his alma mater, having recently completed a year as an assistant professor.

As part of the Baumhart Scholars MBA program at Loyola University Chicago’s Quinlan School of Business, Brown teaches a course on managing and motivating employees. In 10 weeks, students are asked to reflect on themselves to become better leaders.

“The journey has to start with yourself,” Brown said. “Managing and motivating people must start with self-awareness. You have to know yourself and then you can add the various tools we’re talking about to make yourself a better leader.”

Making an impact

Brown has worked with the Big Ten, Deloitte, the Chicago Transit Authority and the University of Illinois to promote social and cultural awareness. Last summer, as part of the Big Life Series, Brown took Big Ten student-athletes and administrators to Selma, Alabama and other historic civil rights sites in Montgomery, Alabama. There, they tour the site of Bloody Sunday, discuss the impact of black history students on the civil rights movement, and discuss Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s journey from Selma to Montgomery.

“It’s time for a change,” Brown said. “I think it’s really important for us to drive what diversity means to the Big Ten.”

Being motivated

Brown brought back to Quinlan a mission to educate and teach diversity in the workplace. In turn, he hopes to illuminate how tomorrow’s leaders will shape their workplaces through his own experience.

He wants those experiences to serve as inspiration for black students as well.
