CLEVELAND, Ohio – Cleveland designer and artist Sierra Boyd’s work has been featured in several national publications, including Nylon and Vogue. Now she’s taking her career to television on HBOMax’s “The Hype.” The first episode of the series drops on Thursday, September 22 at 3pm. In its second season, the show features designers who prove their best streetwear designs are worthy of a “boost.”

Boyd created the future of streetwear under the brand name “Frisk Me Good”. She is known for her sneaker outfits – wearable items, like skirts and bikinis – made from actual sneakers. Her work bridges the gap between creativity and sustainability. For her post-modern creations, she deconstructs sneakers, then reworks them into a new, wearable approach.

“After graduating from Ohio University, I officially launched my clothing line in 2017,” she says. “There, my passion for fashion led me to pursue a major in retail and fashion product development.

“After graduation, I was tired of waiting and wanted to realize my dream of becoming a fashion designer,” she says. “So I couldn’t afford to buy fabrics, so I started working with the materials I had around my house.”

In the year Serendipity came knocking during the 2018 Cleveland Design Contest. For Fashion Mania 2k19, Boyd faced three challenges. The most difficult thing was to create a dress without fabric. “I was stumped,” she recalls. “I didn’t know what to do. I had done everything with the other two tests but it was coming down to the wire. “

“Luckily, one night I was designing and watching ‘Vice’. A segment came up about a man who made a mask out of sneakers. I was like, wait, what if I make sneakers?” she says. “So I tried to make a top and it just didn’t look right. I pulled it down a little bit and I was like, ‘Oh, this is as cute as a corset.’

Boyd took second place in the competition.

So she rolled with her success and listed clothes on social e-commerce site Depop. “People bought it,” she says. “I was surprised, but it also gave me confidence. I didn’t know how I felt about it at the time, but I put it out there just to see how people reacted. The response was overwhelming. So I never stopped making them.”

Today, Boyd wears a variety of sneakers—Nike, Converse, Vans, Puma, and off-brand general shoes.

On “The Hype” she will be seen with different designers from all over the country as they showcase their streetwear designs and unique stories. They tackle timed challenges to create ready-to-wear pieces that balance art and commerce while staying true to their vision. Three judges — Grammy-nominated rapper Offset, acclaimed artist Marnie Cenofonte and progressive designer Beffy Birkett — will give designers constructive feedback on their ideas.

The winner will receive a cash prize of $150,000 and their designs will be sold on StockX, a platform for trading and consumption of current culture.
