With fall upon us and swimwear disappearing from the shelves to make room for sweaters, it’s important to know what the cool kids are wearing to keep up with trends and pretend your life still matters. Which is why I feel compelled to let you know that this week I saw my first man in a crop top on campus.
Now, here in the Midwest, we’re about six years behind the beaches, trends, I have to say, it’s a great style. But here, in the land of jean shorts and polo shirts, where prehistoric crustaceans endure. And so, to that first masculine man at the top of the crop: I say hello.
But after a day, I realized that my joy at seeing a male presenter wearing a midriff shirt on a casual walk must be tempered, and perhaps men’s fashion has taken less action than I thought. However. Trim the top.
As I write this, students are just starting to move into their dorms, so the full fashion report is TBD. But after a morning walk, I can add two beards and a man bun (can we still call him a man bun?) to the list. Also, on the female-approach person: overall shorts. And while I haven’t seen it on campus yet, I know they’re selling it in the marketplace, where young people are buying vintage sweaters embroidered with little butterflies and flowers—sweaters that used to be the domain of 50 third-grade teachers. Helmet hair is the ultimate showpiece right now. It’s good to know.

But it was a trend, it’s such a trend, that one day it will be stupid, but not today because the future is now.

I had a pair of generic shorts in the 90’s. I wear them a lot. a lot of. I wore them until the guy I loved, but they were so cool to me and ended up going on like always on TV, still – I wish I knew before I decided to love him – he said, “Wow, I’m wearing them again. Look at the problem with the young man. And I’m 78% embarrassed because I don’t wear them anymore.” Good for them.
A young woman, who I mistakenly assumed was a student living in the dorm, came to my house in a nice Subaru (she’s probably not a student!) to pick up shopping, and she was wearing a yellow shirt. Is yellow a cool color to wear right now? I do not know. Maybe she was wearing a yellow shirt. She graduates in 2020, so she definitely knows more than I do. In any case, she was not yet old enough to be despised for simply continuing to exist. I look to these guys for clues.
While exploring my neighborhood the other day, I saw a male delivery person riding up University Hill on an electric skateboard. When I was about their age, there were grown men (people) in suits plying their trades on Wall Street on razor scooters, and it was pretty stupid. But it was a trend, it’s such a trend, that one day it will be stupid, but not today because the future is now.
Take your scissors and cut your t-shirt in half. It’s a new day, and it’s time for change.
