Healthcare leaders recently cut the ribbon on a new healing space in Grand Rapids.
Corwell Health on Wednesday, Dec. 7, opened a new sub-acute rehabilitation (SAR) facility that provides short-term rehabilitation for people recovering from surgery, serious injury or illness.
The new facility, 1001 Leffingwell Ave. NE, the 15-acre campus is 82,000 square feet and has 80 beds.
The facility, named Corwell Health-Rehab and Nursing Center Leffingwell, provides a comfortable healing space for acute rehabilitation, low-patient rehabilitation and discharge to the patient’s home.
The SAR facility is expected to be operational in early 2023.
“The new sub-acute rehabilitation facility is designed specifically for the needs of our patients and is in an environment designed to encourage a peaceful recovery,” said Chad Tuttle, senior vice president, Corewell Health West. “Well-designed small facilities provide a modern environment for both rehabilitation and long-term care.”
The SAR facility includes:
- A gym with over 5,000 square feet of fitness and rehabilitation equipment
- A daily living space with a full kitchen, bedroom and bathroom to experience home-like living activities
- Private dining areas that can be reserved for social and family gatherings
- Three squares with sidewalks, chairs and tables
- A private, full-service hair salon offering shampoos, styles, cuts, color, shaves and nail treatments.
- Private patient rooms with 55-inch televisions, handicap accessible showers, comfortable seating and natural views.
- Multipurpose activity room with seating, books, games and activities
Corewell Health-Rehab and Nursing Center Leffingwell will be complemented by a 125-bed long-term care facility scheduled to open in 2024. Construction started in August. It is located on nine acres at the corner of Fuller and Cedar streets in Grand Rapids.
According to a statement from Corewell Health, when both facilities are completed, care will transition from Spectrum Health Rehab and Nursing Center-Fuller Avenue, which was recently named one of the best nursing homes in Michigan by Newsweek.
In addition, as part of Corewell Health’s goal of making its facilities carbon-neutral by 2040, Corewell Health West partnered with CMS Energy to develop a 2.35-acre solar array on the Leffingwell property to help power the SAR facility.
