Young – United Defense Technologies, a specialty coating and engineering company, is opening a downtown location to focus on business with the federal defense industry.
“We need to be in this region, the midwest (Pennsylvania) to Michigan, because we have a customer base that we now serve outside of North Carolina, and the distance is too far,” Marty Fried said. CEO of UPT.
“Our product is a business. We also have a scientific component to our business. We are developing new technologies to reduce corrosion, improve performance, life and performance for the Army,” he said.
About 35 percent of the company’s business deals are with the defense industry, Ifrid said.
UPT “looked at other cities,” he said, but chose Youngstown because of support from the Youngstown Business Incubator, Youngstown State University and Team NEO.
“There’s a lot of support for companies that don’t have a presence in the area to come in and talk and have a structure where you can come in,” Efrid said.
UPT is finalizing a contract to purchase a building on Federal Street and expects to open in December or January, Efried said.
The UPT Youngstown building will be across from Penguin City Brewing Co. on East Federal Street downtown, where U.S. Rep. Tim Ryan’s office will meet with Fried and other defense industry business officials.
UPT plans to hire 30 employees in its first three years of operation in Youngstown and grow to 60 in its fifth year, Efried said.
The company has approximately 60 employees at its corporate headquarters in Locust, NC, where its corporate headquarters will remain.

UPT conducts research and development for several government agencies, including NASA, the Navy, the Army, and the Air Force. It also applies advanced thin film coatings to industrial, commercial and consumer goods including injection molds, guns, blades, valves and gears to extend the life of the goods.
The Youngstown/Warren Regional Chamber assisted UPT with site selection and connected the company with workforce development partners and contractors.
“This is a fantastic opportunity for the (Mahoning) Valley. It involves real manufacturing in research and development,” said Shea McMillan, the chamber’s vice president of economic development. Level workers working from this institution on skilled workers.
“This is a collaboration of the resources that we have gathered in the companies from the Youngstown Business Incubator, ourselves, Tim Ryan’s office and the business exchange of the building, and it shows that we are a good long-term community partner.”
Macmillan’s connection to Youngstown is through the Advanced Manufacturing and Applied Research Innovation Institute (AMARII) in Youngstown, connecting the company to the Youngtown Business Incubator.

America Makes, a national Additive Manufacturing Innovation Institute, is also part of the Center’s network in Youngtown.
Ryan, D-Howland, said for the past 20 years he has been working to “build our children’s futures and help our national security get our economy back on track.”

Ryan’s office staff helped Congressman UPT secure $6 million in federal defense spending.
