TOPEKA, Kan. (WBW) – A Topeka family is shining a light on mental health issues after a loved one was killed Saturday morning.

“She saved our family,” Briana Burton-Kimple said.

Briana and her father, Dr. Russell Burton, are remembering Burton’s fiancee, Diana Bloom.

She has a big heart and loves everyone and I wish I could carry that on even a little. I want to thank her for saving my family and saving my father,” Briana said.

Bloom was critically injured Saturday morning at their home in the 200 block of Northwest Knox and later died.

Police arrested Burton’s 25-year-old adopted son, Elisha Burton. He says the family suffered from behavioral health issues.

“Yes, Eli was getting help, he was getting help,” Dr. Burton said. “He fit right in with the family. Everyone loved Eli, he was loved by the family, they all considered him their brother.”

Burton said the incident was a complete shock.

My late wife and I used to adopt children who were challenging, so all the children who came to us had some serious challenges, they were in multiple placements in the foster care system and they came to us because they didn’t make it. Home and the Answer You know you’re here, and this is your forever home, says Dr. Burton.

The couple shared a love of blues music and support for the homeless community.

“She spent countless hours doing case management with people, taking her here, taking her there, and she was not only an amazing person, she could talk to you,” Dr. Burton said.

Now the family is looking to bring awareness to behavioral health issues, especially among the homeless community.

And they say we will learn to move forward.

“I apologize and we will go. If we don’t see it today, we will see it tomorrow. We will visit him. He’s still my son,” says Dr. Burton.
