John Quelch, an international business and education expert, will step down as dean of the Miami Herbert Business School on December 31 after more than five years in the position, the school announced Friday.

“What we’re seeing right now is the modesty of Chinese students and their parents’ eagerness to enroll in American institutions,” Quelch said in an interview with Forbes on Thursday.

“Over the past decade, Australia, Canada, the United Kingdom, and other European countries have increased their efforts to attract Chinese students,” he said. “And in many cases, visa processing, access, and other logistics-related factors have been very successful at the expense of the inhospitable U.S. that enters the equation of where an international student goes. to study.”

The growing number of Chinese students studying at American universities has helped domestic students and benefited the American economy. One-third of the more than one million international students in the United States are from China, and collectively, they contribute about $15 billion in annual export earnings to the U.S. economy.
