Hazelbrook The winner of two Sprint Stakes in the old filly and mare division this season will return strongly to add to her portfolio in the Ontario Fashion Stakes (G3) at Woodbine. The CA$150,000 Ontario fashion draws a field of six and is the ninth of 10 races, starting at 1:20 pm ET.
Hazelbrook, who runs for Keith Jones’ Northern Stables for real, began her career in late 2020 with a third-placed finish, before finishing her next campaign by winning the maiden and maiden allowances in the Duchess Stakes.
The Kentucky-bred has come into her own this season, knocking off her second allowance status in the Hendry Stakes (G3) and the Listed Sweet Briar Two Stakes before doubling the two races over 6 1/2 furlongs.
Hazelbrook, who came out last, ran valiantly in defeat as she sought to have a masterful popular measure. Lady Speightspear Only to fall by less than a length in the seven-furlong Seaway Stakes (G3) under Jason Hote, her only rider to date.
“We always liked her, but she was very skittish,” trainer Lorne Richards said. “The first time we tried to run her, we barely got her out of the paddock and she broke loose on the line. So it wasn’t like guys were lining up to ride her.

Hoyte has benefited from his partnership with Hazelbrook, winning both of his career opportunities to date.
Richards explained that Hazelbrook’s success came despite suffering from intestinal problems since she was 2 years old.
“For a better description, it’s like colitis,” said the trainer. “She has scarring and swelling on her intestines and stomach lining, and we don’t know what it’s from.
“Somewhere along the line she had a traumatic event. Since we got her here, she’s made three trips to Guelph[the prestigious University of Guelph veterinary clinic nearby]. Fortunately, she didn’t go this year, but she’s gone. Such attacks. It’s really constipated.” No, but she is in real pain.
Marie McKay A junior member of the Ontario Fashion Field at 3 years old, she is also the only winner in the line-up with 5 1/2-furlong Shady Whale Casks in her second career.
