High doses of vitamin D do not improve cardiovascular health

The National Academy of Medicine recommends 600 IU of vitamin D daily for people ages 1 to 70 and 800 IU for adults age 71 and older. However, Manson added, it is reasonable for adults who are concerned about not getting enough vitamin D to take a daily supplement of 1000-2000 IU during the Covid-19 pandemic.

With all of this information, the best way to get vitamin D is through occasional sun exposure, which includes exercising outdoors, eating vitamin D-rich foods, and reading nutrition labels to make sure you’re getting the right amount.

To assess heart health, the researchers conducted randomized controlled trials, including the VITAL trial. Between 2011 and 2013, more than 25,000 adults were enrolled in VITAL, which found that high-dose vitamin D supplements did not prevent cardiovascular events.

After an extensive review of 21 randomized trials, Manson found that both vitamin D and cardiovascular disease “did not show clear benefits of vitamin D supplementation in preventing heart disease or stroke.”

Factors such as exercise, diet and inflammation levels have all been targeted since adults with higher vitamin D levels were less likely to develop cardiovascular disease in observational studies.

Researchers are currently focusing on how high-dose vitamin D supplements support immune function in people with autoimmune conditions, including rheumatoid arthritis, lupus and lupus. Other research on this topic suggests that vitamin D may reduce the severity of Covid-19 infections, shorten recovery, and reduce the long-term risk of Covid-19.

Research is also underway to determine if a diet high in vitamin D can slow the progression and reduce cancer-related deaths.

“Patients at high risk for adverse cardiovascular outcomes may benefit from vitamin D supplementation,” said Alvin A. Chandra, MD, VITAL researcher and assistant professor in the Department of Cardiology at Texas Southwestern Medical University. Center, in a press release.
