Fall means two things to Suffolk University students – the start of a new semester and new fashion trends. As the temperatures drop and the leaves on the trees change color, Bostonians quickly begin to discover the meaning behind fall fashion and all the unique ways to style it.
TikTok and Pinterest are some of the major platforms behind fashion inspiration, and Fall is no exception. Layered clothing, oversized clothing, combat boots and straight-leg jeans are just a few of the trends that both social media platforms have brought to life on the Suffolk campus.
Check out the latest trends on campus and around town and the new clothes you need in your fall closet.
Dressing clothes
Layering is always a smart way to stay fashionable and warm. It started around the 80s and actresses like Danielle Fishel and Brooke Shields pushed the trend by wearing t-shirts under their skirts.
Here in New England, Suffolk students have become experts at staying stylish while braving the cold weather.
“I love layering and a cozy sweater is one of my favorite staple pieces for fall,” said Suffolk freshman Myra Page.
In Suffolk, layering consists of basics such as wallies, long sleeves or button-ups that rest under a garment such as a large sweater or sweater. However, the overlap does not stop there. Layered under mini and midi skirts or an oversized shirt over a crop top are some trendy ways to add to your fall fashion wardrobe.
For students like freshman Gia Garcia, stacking inspires creative use of spare parts.
“Laying sweaters and the fall weather gives me inspiration to dress more comfortably and wear more jewelry,” Garcia said.
Oversized clothes
Oversized clothing, used to stay comfortable for an 8 o’clock class or simply because the Adam Sandler-inspired look is all the rage, is a surprising fashion trend worn by many Bostonians.
Oversized sweaters, t-shirts, hoodies and jackets can be styled to suit both casual and streetwear trends. Fashion icons Hailey Bieber and Princess Diana are great examples of how to over-dress and look gorgeous at the same time. An oversized crew neck paired with a black mini skirt and Dr. Martens boots is one example of the ultimate fall fashion outfit.
Combat boots
Combat boots are the ultimate fall footwear necessity. A company like Dr. Martens is a great place to start because they offer a variety of boots, low platform shoes, and shoes that give consumers endless possibilities for their fall style.
From skirts to jeans, Bostonians can often be seen styling both lace-up boots and casual boots on stage in a variety of fall looks. However, these types of shoes can be used for many different outfits as the seasons change.
“In terms of fall fashion, I like chunky boots and midi and mini skirts,” sophomore Emily Rodriguez said.
Not only are they fashionable, but combat boots are incredibly versatile seasonal shoes because they can be worn in both fall and winter. College students on a budget may be happy to hear that packing shoes can keep things to a minimum.
Straight-leg jeans
Levi’s vintage straight-leg jeans, including 501s and 505s, have completely dominated the Boston fashion scene. In the ’90s, Levi’s was a climate-friendly resource company and the go-to denim store for anyone looking to be comfortable and stylish.
Levi’s is still an amazing jeans store as 90’s fashion trends continue to come back into style. In fact, many famous icons like Zendaya, Gigi Hadid and Maud Apatow are seen wearing straight jeans today.
These wardrobe staple jeans look great teamed with an oversized shirt, a pair of sneakers and a blazer. Because jeans never go out of style, straight leg jeans are a great fall fashion to add to your closet.
