How to use the iPhone health app

From analyzing your sleep patterns to tracking an aging parent’s stamina, your iPhone’s Health app can be a useful way to track and share important health information. Apple’s highly customizable app asks you to pick and choose which health categories are most important to you and, in some cases, select different lifestyle categories.

Here’s a closer look at how to use some of the health app’s features.

Tap your health checklist.

Before entering the Health app categories, click on your profile in the upper right corner and then tap on “Health Checklist”. Under this checklist, you can configure various health attributes, one of which is your medical ID. Here, you can include any medical conditions, allergies, and medications you have with your emergency contact. When you use Emergency SOS (which you can activate by pressing the side button and the volume button at the same time), your iPhone will automatically call 911 and a message with your current location will go to your emergency contact without having to unlock your phone. Emergency responders can access any critical information in your medical ID, such as drug allergies.

By activating the “Sleep schedule” in the sleep category, you can record your optimal amount of sleep and set bedtime and bedtime, which will automatically turn on the alarm and remind you to get ready for sleep. You can change this by day and turn it off for the weekend, or separate Tuesday and Thursday from the rest of the week, for example.

Once you’ve recorded your ideal sleep schedule, you’ll be prompted to set a “wind-down period” that temporarily disables certain functions on your phone and removes distractions. I decided to set a 30 minute wind down window with just a shortcut to the Calm app to listen to music and the reminder app before bed if I’m trying to remember something in the morning.

Share your health records

You can choose to add health records and appointment data under your profile. You can add your existing health records in one place, which is crucial for specialists who want to see the whole picture. You can share any of your health data with anyone else under the Health app sharing tab. This is especially important for caregivers. You can give your dad permission to access specific information he wants to share, and you can check his exercise minutes, sleep duration, or mobility.

Even with your phone in your pocket, this gait stability feature monitors your balance and can detect your risk of falling over the next 12 months.

This feature is useful for caregivers. You can ask an aging parent to share this information from their health app, and you’ll be notified if they’re at risk of falling or if their stability is waning.

As you scroll through the categories, you’ll see exercise tips to help improve gait and stability.

Get notifications if you’re too loud for music

Your Health app also allows you to monitor headphone volume levels. Go to Headphone Volume Levels and enable notifications, so you’ll be notified if you’re listening to audio too loud. You can also see if your noise exposure is approaching the 7-day recommended limit for local noise levels.

Use a third-party app to track mental habits

Many other apps integrate with the Apple Health app to keep your health and safety information in one place. Your heart rate is recorded. You can also pair your phone with Calm, Headspace, and other reminder apps with Apple’s Health app by going into the app’s settings. Your progress is tracked all in one place. If you have the Apple Watch, you can use Reminder Minutes without taking out your phone and be inspired to take a minute to breathe or reflect.

Control your heart rate

b Apple View users, under the heart rate category, can track your resting heart rate and also turn on notifications when abnormally high or irregular heart rates are detected. You can also share the data with your doctor.

In the same section, you can also see your cardio fitness as measured by your VO2 max, which is the maximum amount of oxygen your body can take in during exercise. You can see your number compared to your average VO2 max.

Back in your “Health Checklist”, you can set up your ECG app, which will take your watch’s electrocardiogram. You can draw this graph and also share it with the doctor.

Other health app features include exercise minutes, standing minutes and distances, cycle tracking, and activity to track symptoms on a given day.
