Tubas, West Bank, August 19, 2010 (FBC) Palestinian Ministry of Health announced that a Palestinian died of his wounds after being shot by Israeli soldiers. .
Salah Tawfiq Sawafta, 58, was shot in the head in the West Bank city of Tubas, the Palestinian Ministry announced. Sawafta was returning home after morning prayers when he was hit, his niece told Reuters.
A video shared on social media shows the moments before Sawafta was shot. Sawafta, dressed in a traditional jalabiya robe, runs to hide in a bakery when gunshots are heard.
The Israeli army stated that the Palestinians in Tubas threw Molotov cocktails and opened fire on the army.
Yesterday, the military arrested five suspects who were “planning terrorist attacks” from Tubas and the nearby town of Tamun, he said in a statement.
One of the top members of the terrorist group Islamic Jihad, 32-year-old editor Mamon Naeem Bani Odeh, said he was arrested during the Tamun raid.
“It is clear that they are conducting a campaign of raids and arrests,” Islamic Jihad said in a statement.
Earlier this month, Israeli jets pounded the blockaded Gaza Strip in what the military said was a preemptive strike against a possible threat to Israel from Islamic Jihad.
At least 49 people were killed and hundreds injured, including civilians and children, in Gaza during the 56-hour war, and more than 1,000 rockets were fired into Israel by Islamic Jihad.
Israeli forces have carried out near-daily attacks in the West Bank in recent months, following deadly street attacks by local Palestinians in Israel.
