The new home of the Susan Samuels Institute for Integrative Health, a 21,432-square-foot facility designed to expand its clinical, teaching and research capabilities to provide whole-person care, is now open at UC Irvine.
“The new center is the brick-and-mortar realization of our vision to make integrative care a national standard for all,” said Susan Samueli, chair of the Samuel Foundation’s board of directors and a longtime supporter of the institute. Several small clinics are located throughout the county. “The design and care of the new center must achieve the goal of hoping, being seen and heard as individuals when working with the health care system.
The new flagship of the health facility offers 42 rooms for consultation, patient examination and treatment, cardiology and other services.
Patients are also offered nutrition, exercise, mindfulness, yoga and group therapy classes. And, the center will be open to the community for yoga, tai chi and nutritional cooking classes, as well as educational talks and events.
More than 50% of the population uses some form of integrated health, but treatments are not typically provided in one place, said Dr. Shaista Malik, executive director of the health facility.
“There’s real integration here, so patients know we’re talking about their emotional well-being, not just their physical condition,” Malik said.
“We’re starting to understand the science behind a lot of why these treatments work,” she said of the advances and the use of integrated health care. For example, for acupuncture, it has been developing for the last 20 years, so it is part of the guidelines for many different conditions. As for treating chronic pain, there is evidence that it is actually effective.
The facility will open as part of the new Susan and Henry Samuel College of Health Sciences, a 110,000-square-foot complex on the university’s campus at California Avenue and Michael Drake Drive. At the time, the donation was the seventh largest for a public university, UCI officials said.
Henry Samueli is the owner and co-founder of the Anaheim Ducks and chairman of the board of Broadcom, a semiconductor and infrastructure software products manufacturer.
Over the years, the Samuels family has donated hundreds of millions of dollars to charitable causes in the county. It was theirs in 2000 $5.7 million was awarded to help establish the Susan Samueli Center for Integrative Medicine..
Integrative health and wellness is a big passion for Susan Samuels, says her husband.
“We certainly hope that this new building and what it stands for will reflect you, Susan, and the human dignity and courageous ideals you stand for,” Henry Samueli said.
UCI Chancellor Howard Gilman said the institute will uplift the entire community by encouraging a focus on preventive care and wellness, not just disease.
“This is not an alternative to health,” Gilman said. “This is what health should be.[This institute]is an authentic and symbolic entry point to the high aspirations and long-term innovation and health education research and delivery across our nation.”
“Health needs to be rethought,” he said, “and this is a monument not only to our nation’s community, but to health care and health care.
