The appearance of Iran’s supreme leader follows unconfirmed reports that the 83-year-old is ‘gravely ill’.

The New York Times reported on Friday, citing unnamed sources, that Khamenei suffered severe abdominal pain last week and his condition deteriorated, prompting him to undergo surgery for a bowel obstruction.

Neither the Iranian government nor state media would comment on Khamenei’s health status and were similarly silent on the reports.

Reports about Khamenei’s health and false claims about his death have made headlines several times in recent years.
Khamenei, Iran’s supreme leader since 1989, underwent successful prostate cancer surgery in 2014.
