Oscar-winning actor Jared Leto is making sure Karl Lagerfeld’s legacy lives on.
Leto, 50, dons the late fashion designer’s signature dark shade in the upcoming biopic.
“I feel like it’s a full-circle moment and Karl is proud of what we’re doing,” German designer Leto, who died in 2019 at the age of 85, told Womenswear Daily.
He teased that it will capture key relationships in Karl Lagerfeld’s life, through an obscure lens, just like the man himself,” though he remains tight-lipped about the upcoming film’s main themes.
“My role is to portray him on screen as faithfully as possible,” Leto added.
In an effort to honor Lagerfeld’s legacy through the lens, Leto, who is set to co-produce the film with his partner Emma Ludbrook, has appointed three of the late designer’s closest and most trusted business partners as executive producers.
These include Karl Lagerfeld CEO Pier Paolo Rigi, Lagerfeld Senior Vice President of Image and Communications Caroline Lebar and Sebastien Jondeau, personal assistant to the late Chanel creative director.
The official Karl Lagerfeld Twitter account said: “We are thrilled to share that we are making a film about Karl Lagerfeld with Academy Award-winning actor @JaredLeto.”
While portraying one of the most iconic fashion trends on the silver screen can be a daunting proposition, Leto has extensive experience in that area.
The Golden Globe winner portrays Paolo Gucci in the 2021 drama “House of Gucci.”
The news comes just days after it was announced that the 2023 Met Gala theme, “Karl Lagerfeld’s Beauty Line,” will take place on May 1.
But the topic didn’t sit well with “The Good Place” star Jamila Jamil, who had some choice words about Vogue editor-in-chief Anna Wintour’s choice.
The Met wrote in a press release that the show will feature nearly 150 designs that “represent the artistic style and metaphorical vocabulary of Karl Lagerfeld’s designs over 65 years, with recurring themes from the 1950s to his final collection in 2019.”
Only in 2023, the bash brings together wealth, fashion, A-list stars, viral moments and designers in one night.
