Rapper Makes Runway Debut as He Leads Muddy Road for Winter 2023 Collection
It was Kanye West. Back to his natural habitat on Sunday – Paris Fashion Week – where the rapper kicked off Balenciaga’s summer 2023 collection show by leading the parade down a muddy “runway”.
Despite breaking ties with Gap, West’s partnership with Balenciaga continues as he became the first “model” to tread the dark circular dirt road — “for digging for truth and down-to-earth style,” Balenciaga creative director Demna explained in the show’s notes — with the rapper rocking a black jacket with funky utility pockets. Dressed up, it gave him an almost military look. Adding to the battle-ready outfit was the word “Security” on the left breast of the coat.
When Kanye said (and read) that he was gearing up for a “battle” against the gap, he wasn’t kidding:
according to ElleWest’s sons North, Chicago, Anthem and Saint West all attended the Balenciaga show – which marked Ye’s first-ever runway appearance – as did Doja Cat and Kylie Jenner. Bella Hadid was also among the models who frolicked in the mud.
Demna added in the show notes about the summer ’23 line, “I’ve decided to no longer explain my collections and describe my designs with words, but rather a state of mind. Fashion is a visual art and we only want it to be seen through one person’s eyes… whether you like it or not.
