bThe lack of people always flew. But now, designers at HBCUs are getting a boost through Harlem’s Fashion Row and Tapestry. The parent company behind Stuart Weitman, Kate Spade and Coach. Tapestry and Harlem Fashion Row partner with Katy Spade to give HBCUs direct access to the behind-the-scenes staff and infrastructure of these iconic brands.
The three-year partnership includes the Harlem Fashion Row HBCU Summit, which launched in 2020. The initiative aims to improve fashion and design programs nationwide to better prepare students for design careers. The partnership with Kate Spade begins at Maryland’s Bowie State University, the state’s oldest HBCU. Three years later, the program adds to the coach and Stuart Weitzman.
