Rain is not all gray and dark.
We avoid the joy of rain when we cower under our umbrella or drown in the rain. Rain brings new beginnings. It washes away the dust, dirt or debris on the road. It gives life to plants. He swims in ponds to splash with joy.
This is the philosophy that Kate Spade New York’s new creative leaders embodied in their Spring 2023 collection. This season will not only mark the first time Tom Moran and Jennifer Liu’s brand will return to New York Fashion Week, but also Kate Spade New York since the start of the pandemic. (Mora heads ready-to-wear shoes, jewelry, home and lifestyle, while Liu heads handbags and accessories.)
The designers’ anniversary offering is filled with bold prints, stylish raincoats, bold sunglasses and pompom-adorned heels. A wide-brimmed rain hat, available in different colors, captures the spirit of the collection better.
“It’s the energy we want to put out, to see it and enjoy it and see everything and take it all in,” Mora says. It’s all about new perspectives – wearing a hat as opposed to cowering under an umbrella gives the wearer the ability to look up and trust the rain.
At the top of 3 World Trade Center, overlooking the bustling city, the models were completely lined up under “clouds” made of balloons. A soft soundtrack, including rain, played as rain fell behind them.
Among more functional handbags and cross-body bags, stand out pieces like the Rain Cloud Bag, with thin chains of shiny metal underneath. A mix of utility and playfulness are key to the Kate Spade New York code. After all, Liu argues, handbags are the most expressive external version of ourselves.

“Handbags hold secrets,” she says. “And to have a clearer state of mind that will help you throughout the day, there’s a lot more behind creating a bag.”
The collection stays true to the essence of Kate Spade New York – revolving around vibrancy, playfulness, fantasy, art, femininity and New York City. Mixed publications. The waist is tied with flower belts. Fiery red and lime zip green. Structured crossbody and shoulder bags. Pearl details and sparkling earrings.
“People are very unique and individual, and that’s the beauty of what we’re going for,” says Mora. “What binds all these women together is the love of happiness, color, femininity, self-expression and self-confidence. Our goal is not to make women confident – she is already confident, we are adding to it.”
Before becoming Kate Spade New York’s senior vice president and head of ready-to-wear and lifestyle design, Mora worked at Cole Haan, J. Crew and Coach. Leu has led accessories at Tory Burch, Prada and 3.1 Phillip Lim before presenting leather goods and accessories.
“There’s a lot of excitement and a rich heritage,” Liu says. “It was such an honor to be able to participate.”
