I have served this community for 12 years as a neurosurgeon and for 12 more as a member of the Kootenay Health Board of Directors. There are two critical institutions for our community: Kootenai Health and North Idaho College. Both are endangered. This is because both boards are prone to being taken over by ulterior motives and are not in the interest of the institution or the society.
For NIC, the short-term answer is to elect highly respected and qualified people to that board. The same goes for Kootenai Health. The long-term answer to the health of the Kootenai is more complex. An elected hospital board, as opposed to an appointed board, is an anachronism today. Most of the hospital boards are appointed. This ensures that quality people who are in the best interest of the institution are placed on the board. There is no place for politics in an institution responsible for the health of citizens.
During my tenure on the Kootenay Board, we explored everything we could to allow the board to be appointed. We failed to find a solution. A possible solution has now been found. Kootenay Health could be a 501c3 organization and have a more active, committed, responsible hospital board. I wholeheartedly support this move.
