Los Angeles Fashion Week picks new Hollywood locations – WWD

Los Angeles Fashion Week, under new ownership since the beginning of the year, hopes to make this season, October 6 to 9, a turning point for the event.

This time, only about half of the designers are offering regular runway looks, while others are opting to present their collections at the four-day event, which starts on Thursday, with spectacular events and parties.

“All these different products are showing up in their own way,” said Ciarra Pardo, founder and CEO of N4XT Experiences. Earlier in the year, the new company acquired LA Fashion Week for an undisclosed sum from the fashion show’s founder, Arthur Chipman, who remained as producer.

One of these fashion shows will be held at the Fleur du Mal presentation. The New York underwear and ready-to-wear brand is teaming up with House of Yes, a New York company that’s part nightclub and part circus theater to create a range of activities. “There’s two actors standing there drinking cocktails, listening to music, and all of a sudden they’re wearing fleur du mal,” Pardo said. “They’re creating a wild, beautiful and wonderful boudoir experience.”

Pardo’s vision is to rely more on non-runway events, up-and-coming designers and technologies to enhance the semiannual shows.

With that in mind, LA Fashion Week will no longer be held at the Peterson Automotive Museum, its home since 2018.

It is moving to many places. Two of the main locations are in Hollywood, and the third is in the West Hollywood Hotel.

Most runway shows are held at the Lighthouse ArtSpace on Sunset Boulevard. The building was home to Amoeba Records until it moved a few years ago. Recently, the structure, not far from the historic Cinerama Dome, has been used to display immersive art installations by Vincent van Gogh, King Tut and Frida Kahlo.

“The Lighthouse is a floor-to-ceiling, 360-degree fully immersive experience,” Pardo said, adding that images can be seen on the walls.

She explained that the Peterson Automotive Museum was a great place, but had limited space. Former public school designer Maxwell Osborne wasn’t hosting the nearly 500 people who signed up for AnOnlyChild’s opening night show in New York last year. He recently showed his 2023 spring collection at New York Fashion Week and will show it again in LA

Other brands on the runway will be Gypsy Sports, LA designer Rio Oribe’s glam streetwear line based on Chicano culture, which he showed at the Peterson Museum in October 2021 and has shown in New York in past seasons.

Other brand additions include premium jeans line Revis Denim, up-and-coming Sami Miro Vintage and Demobaza, a futuristic Bulgarian line that recently created a “Dune”-inspired collection that will close out Sunday’s fashion event. Also on the schedule: Filipino designers Francis Libiran, Avel Bacudio and Chris Nick, and Indonesian brand Xiao Fen Couture, which has shown at past LAFW events.

Another active actress, Issa Ra, has teamed up with Delta Air Lines to launch a fashion and accessories line based in Santa Monica, California.

About 25 to 30 percent of the designers who show at LA Fashion Week are from Los Angeles, Pardo said.

New to the revamped event are a handful of fireside chats, panels and masterclasses, in a renovated former newspaper building across the street from the Lighthouse ArtSpace, which is home to busy restaurant Mother Wolf.

Discussions and lectures range from “with the construction business” to “the future of fashion,” featuring speakers such as fashion personality Joe Zee, model/activist Bethany Hardison, artist Donald Robertson, and actress/influencer Danielle Lauder.

Sponsors mostly come from the world of technology and sustainability. These include Logitech, Bolt, Ray-Ban Stories, Mercedes-Benz of Los Angeles, Red Bear Winery and wellness-connected-real-estate company Delos.

LA has had several fashion weeks over the years with mixed results. Most of them lasted a few years and then faded away.

Started by brothers Dean and Davis Factor, grandsons of the famous Hollywood makeup artist Max Factor, it is one of the major efforts organized by IMG in collaboration with local commercial photo studio and cosmetics company Smashbox Studios.

It was one of the better organized events and was held for five years in a large photo studio in Culver City, California, but it did not make enough money to continue, and it closed in 2008.

Arthur Chipman, who is the director of development at Vancouver Fashion Week, started LA Fashion Week in 2015 after moving from Canada.

His first show took place at Uni Station, a historic downtown train station, which is an architectural gem with its wooden ceilings and massive art-deco style chandeliers.

The fashion event moved around town until it found a stable location in 2018 at the Petersen Automotive Museum, with vintage cars and wide spaces, giving it more staying power. LA Fashion Week was held there last April, when Gregg Lauren drew Usher and Chance the Rapper from the front row.

Still, most of the commercially successful LA-based high fashion brands chose to show elsewhere, but sometimes returned to LA for one-off shows, such as Rhuigi Villasenor’s Rhude runway show at The Mansion in Beverly Hills, and Mike Amiri’s collaboration with Wes Lang. Milk Studios in Hollywood.

Although LA Fashion Week was rocky, the city’s sun and celebrity-filled landscape also drew megabrands to the city and its neighborhoods, including Dior, which showed its men’s resort collection at Venice Beach in May, and Gucci, which closed Hollywood Boulevard for its November 2021 show.

On October 13, Ralph Lauren will present its men’s and women’s collections for spring 2023 at the Huntington Library, Art Museum and Botanic Gardens in San Marino for its first West Coast fashion show.

All of these fashion experiences inspired Pardo, Fenty’s former chief creative officer, to co-found N4XT Experiences earlier this year with Spring Plus president and founder Imad Ezemran and entertainment and finance veterans Marcus Ticotin, Keith Abel and Jackie Treblecock.

Their aim is to develop emerging designers and international brands in a fashion event that incorporates a lot of technology and supports sustainability. “I don’t think until now, it was time for a platform like this,” Pardo said. But there’s this great renaissance and changes coming to Los Angeles.
