ANN ARBOR, MI — Loungewear meets streetwear at the first fashion show hosted by an Ann Arbor store.
ArtCareShop at Briarwood Mall will host its first fashion show and Y2K-themed party from 5 p.m. to noon Saturday, Oct. 8, 500 E. Liberty St. The show itself starts at 7pm and lasts for about 20 minutes.
Spouse Julia and Dakota Brown opened ArtCareShop as an Esti store in 2020 after Julia was inspired to design the clothes she struggled to find during the Covid-19 pandemic.
“I had all these business suits, and I couldn’t find anything specifically for the pandemic,” Brown said.
The couple opened a physical location in the mall in April 2021.
Brown’s designs are a combination of streetwear and loungewear, she said, many of which were concepts from the early 2000s. The brand focuses on making clothes that are non-binary.
“I was like, how can I adapt this for today? So I did the high-waisted colors, I did the cut-out hoodie,” Brown said. It’s a reimagined thing but still inspired.
Pieces play with a variety of fabrics, including cotton, wool, hemp, recycled polyester, and fabrics made from corn and wood.
The party and fashion show will feature comedians, barbecue restaurant Ricewood, a cash bar and a temporary tattoo station. The show will feature 30 outfits and is the first time Brown has seen her entire collection in one place.
“I usually make one piece at a time, and it takes about six months to make one piece,” she said. “So it’s very interesting to see.”
The show is open to those 21 and older. Tickets are $20 if purchased in advance and $25 at the door. Event wristbands also allow entry to Necto, 516 E. Liberty St., from 9 to 10 p.m. for the after-party.
