Oregon softball swept its second Saturday doubleheader of the fall.
Hannah Delgado was 4 for 5 with six RBI for the Ducks in a 30-2 win over College of the Siskiyous and Keke Humphreys was 3 for 3 with a double and a two-run home run in a 14-2 win over Oregon Tech. Afternoon at Jane Sanders Stadium.
“I thought they started really fast,” Oregon coach Melissa Lombardi said. “I like how we started this game. Thought they got off to a quick start, they did really well with our situational hitting. I don’t care (b) how we finish in all areas. You can go it’s a double header, it’s a long day – too bad. Finish it the way you want it to finish.”
Against College of the Siskiyous, the Ducks jumped out to a 4-0 lead behind a solo home run by Terra McGowan (4 for 4), an RBI triple by Valerie Wong (3 for 3) and a two-run home run by Tehia Bird.
Delgado hit a two-run single to open the scoring in a 10-run second inning and drove in a run. Wong added a two-run triple, Allison Benning hit a two-run home run and McGowan hit an RBI single in the frame.
Oregon added runs in the third and fourth with RBI singles by Kedre Luschar and Delgado, RBI doubles by McGowan and Wild Plates.
Paige Sinicki hit an RBI double in the fifth, then Humphreys drove in a run, Delgado hit a two-run double and Caitlin Howard hit a two-run single in the sixth.
Allison Benning struck out three and allowed an unearned run, over 4.0 innings with a runner on third. Morgan Scott allowed an unearned run on a wild pitch, walked two and struck out four over 3.0 innings.
“She’s just got to grow it. You can see she’s great when she has command and then she’s a little lost.”
At Oregon Tech, McGowan hit a two-run single as part of a four-run inning. Carlson hit an RBI double in the second and Humphreys hit a two-run home run in the third to make it 7-0.
Oregon Tech got on the board in the top of the fourth on a double and one-out by Ragen Breedlove, who allowed three hits and struck out three over 4.0 innings.
McGowan hit a two-run homer and Benning hit a solo shot in the bottom of the inning.
Scott made quick work of Oregon Tech in the fifth, but the Ducks went down in order in the bottom of the game.
Lombardi wasn’t happy with the team’s finish because of a scoreless fourth inning and a six-pitch fifth inning.
“I think being able to do that at any time and staying consistent with what we’re doing is really important, especially when we get into the pack,” Lombardi said. “You have battles where you go back and forth and you have to be mentally strong and know that you have to push to the end. I think it’s important for us to do that.”
“We’ve had an inning where we’ve had a six-pitch inning and then come in and have two hits and a groundout. You can’t have that. We’ve got a six-pitch inning, you go in, take that momentum and we’ve got to do more. Those are the things we’ve got to be better at.”
Scott allowed a run on two hits in the fifth and shut down Benning, who allowed a hit and two walks on two hits in the seventh.
Sophomore pitcher Stevie Hansen didn’t pitch for the second straight weekend, but Lombardi said she won’t be out all fall and will play “soon.”
The Ducks host Western Oregon on Tuesday night at 5:30 p.m. and will honor the late Spencer Webb at Kidsports in Eugene by collecting new and used sports equipment at the game and the football team’s first game.
“At Spencer Webb, they have a foundation to give their high school education to people in their area, so we want to honor that foundation by giving to the kids in our area through Kidsports,” Lombardi said. “We’ve got some tight ends that come up as a team, somebody’s going to make the first play and respect him.”
