Haverhill’s public health chief says it’s becoming as common as the flu every year around updated Covid-19 vaccines.

In a recent interview on WHAV’s morning program, Haverhill Public Health Director Mary Connolly said that each year’s coronavirus vaccines target different strains, similar to the formulas used for flu shots.

“We were talking to the government yesterday about this. It looks like it will probably change to an annual type of vaccination, yes,” she says.

How each fall can spread is becoming evident this month with flu and Covid-19 clinics offering residents a variety of vaccination options. As it has been for the past two years, the Covid-19 vaccine is top of mind.

“The amount of reinforcement is allowed, the amount of binary reinforcement. Anyone who received a covid vaccine two months ago is eligible for the new two-dose. This is a vaccine that covers different types of covid, so it’s a little different than the first vaccine we all get. And, hopefully, this one will be more effective in the emerging Omnicom variants,” she says.

The Adult Flu Clinic will be held on Tuesday, Oct. 11 at 10 a.m. at the Haverhill Civic Center, 10 Welcome St., Haverhill. Pre-registration is required by calling 978-374-2390, ext. 3915. Walgreens is giving out the doses and residents must bring an insurance card. Pneumonia and modern covid-19 boosters are also available.

Connolly said the adult Moderna vaccine will also be offered Thursday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., and both the Pfizer and Moderna vaccines for all ages will be offered Thursday from 4-7 a.m. and Sunday from 10 a.m.-3 p.m. Throughout the month of October.
