What services does your business offer and why are they important?
Flourishing Horticulture offers comprehensive maintenance from lawn and garden care, design and planting. Everything we do is environmentally friendly and conscious. We care for the environment – we act as stewards of the environment as part of our responsibility to care. Health is also part of our work. We want to create a greener and cleaner city.
Name one way your business had to adapt during the pandemic.
That’s a good question – one way to adapt is to put a price on it. We have included additional services to keep the price margins where they are and to ensure that we retain customers. For other customers, we have reduced rates slightly and added additional services. Some initially paid $75 for two weeks of services, so we lowered the price to $60 and added weekly services. We have made price adjustments to accommodate customers. Maintaining our customer base has been important and has allowed us to continually expand our operations by maintaining existing customers and pursuing new customers at various service levels and price points.

How does your business affect the physical or mental health of the people it serves?
We empower women to succeed by providing them with the resources they need to overcome all odds and reach their goals of education and small home ownership. As a black New Orleans woman, I understand that the landscape of home ownership here has changed since Katrina. I know the importance of resources and community in your area. It’s important because we need a village, and when we come together, we can all succeed. More than tiny houses, the community is an important part of our work. The mental health and wellbeing issue we see is that it’s hard to work, be a mum and work during the day, if you don’t know where you’re going to sleep at night. Having a home takes the weight off when there are so many other pressures. There are many programs that help women enter the home, but they do not show how to keep a home, how to continue working. In 2023, we will launch our education department and provide one-on-one support to build career and financial stability. We are transforming mental health by providing resources for their practical living conditions. I have a degree in economics and an MBA, but what drives this work is my story and understanding of the experiences of black mothers in New Orleans.
What goals are you most excited about working to achieve through the Impact Accelerator?
When we launch in March, we will have the curriculum ready and fully prepared for our 5-8 girl pilot program to emerge. Before we get to the small house process, we need to educate women. I have built partnerships through the Impact Accelerator, one of which provides access to focus groups and valuable feedback for the curriculum we deliver.
