SALINA, Kan. (KWCH) – A Salina restaurant owner hopes to do more than satisfy people’s appetites. Recognizing the impact of mental health, it’s providing a place where people can find some relaxation, a mental health gym that also celebrates life.

The concept with a mental health gym is a place for health, not to build muscles, but to ease the mind.

Ben Lee had a simple goal when he first conceived of a place dedicated to relieving stress, helping mind, body and soul.

“They get to be away from a judgment-free-type zone and have a fun ‘me day,'” Lee says.

Maine, body and soul coordinator Erin Kerby helps people calm down with appointments and walk-ins. An anxious Kerby says she has a connection to such a resource.

“It was about giving people options, what works best for you. This is what we put together here,” she said.

At Myne, Body and Soul, Kerby says one feature that helps her is the viboacoustic bed, which after using it for 10 minutes is like “you’re in a completely different world.”

“I mean, it’s gentle. “I seem to be able to concentrate better,” she said.

For Lee, the mental health gym is serving a personal purpose. Honoring his wife, Jazmine, who died by suicide last year. It was the kind of place that could have helped me, body and soul.

“She wanted ‘my day’ leading up to her death, and she said it over and over again. I couldn’t give that to her and I didn’t even know the real impact of the importance of something like that,” he said.

The Mental Health Gym is not intended to replace traditional mental health services, but to build on what they can provide.

“It’s where you go to get you to your next counseling session or your next therapy session,” Kerby said.

For Lee, it’s a place where people can alleviate some of the pain Jazmine has experienced and where he can try to ward off the pain of loss that he knows so well.

“Hopefully preserving her memory, healing other people,” he said.

Mind, Body & Soul is the first mental health gym of its kind in Kansas. A session costs $1 per minute. Membership options are also available.
