Lubbock, Texas – The Texas Tech Red Raiders (11-2) open Big 12 play this weekend against the West Virginia Mountaineers (6-6) on Saturday at 12pm at the WVU Coliseum.
Tech is 3-1 over the weekend at the Red Raider Classic where three Red Raiders were named to the all-tournament team – Brooke Kanas (MVP), Reagan Cooper And Maddie O’Brien. O’Brien continues to light up the service line, dishing out 12 aces during the Red Raider Classic. Her 28 total aces is now sixth in the country, and she also sits at 22 in aces per set. Junior set Reese Rhodes He helped the team with 512 assists and was ranked 15th, and 10.67 was the reason for the team’s offense. Foreign killer Kenna Sauer She is 13th in kills with 196 and 20th in both kills (4.26) and points (215.0) as well.
Defensively, second libero Maddie Correa She led the team with 201 assists, up from her previous 2021 season total of 172. Kanas and Carrington Jones Kanas is leading the team in blocks with 46.0 overall and Jones with 45.0.
Scouting the opponent
The Mountaineers come into the match at 6-6 overall. Tech won the last two meetings at West Virginia by scores of 3-1 and 3-2 last season for an all-time record of 13-9. WVU is on a three-game winning streak after winning each game at the Mountaineer Invitational against Merrimack, Binghamton and Delaware State. The Mountaineers have wins over Northern Colorado and Loyola, while dropping games to UCLA, Texas State, Penn State and Hawai’i.
As a team, West Virginia totaled 539 kills (11.7 kills per set), 492 assists, 78 aces, 583 digs and 107.0 blocks. Both Adrian Ill and Bailey Miller had 134 and 128 kills. Kamiya Gibson has a team-high 323 assists, Sky Stokes leads the way with 150 digs, and Tierney Jackson has a team-leading 41.0 blocks.
