Winners in 2022 McKnight’s The excellence of the technology awards was announced yesterday afternoon in a virtual presentation McKnight’s Tech Awards + Summit, including three webinars.
At the ceremony, 13 awards were presented in four categories in the Senior Living track, including awards in the Qualified Nursing and Home Care tracks, as well as Best in Show and Tech Associate of the Year awards.
Top living winners
The Senior Living track winners in all four categories are listed below.
Creator of the year
Creator of the year category A recognized technological innovation that has made a difference in the delivery of care or services or the bottom line.
Winning gold was John Knox Village, Lee’s Summit, MO, “Using Technology to Reduce Falls and Improve Lives.”
The award recognizes the use of VirtuSense’s VSTBalance System, a Center for Community Fitness Level Experience, or FLEX, to help John Knox Village residents improve their overall health and reduce the risk of falls. An evaluation of the technology led to 62 residents being referred to the village’s exercise group for special assistance. Over 8% of residents improved their walking, and 75% of re-examined residents improved their ability to sit. The FLEX program helped create a continuum of care between the fitness center and the PT program, helping residents stay independent longer.
Other awardees in the Senior Living Track Innovator of the Year category:

Quality
Quality The category recognizes the use of technology to improve the quality of care or services.
Winning Gold Friendship Village Senior Services, Sr.
The award recognizes Friendship Village’s fall prevention technology, powered by VirtuSense, an artificial intelligence to assess each resident’s ability to walk, sit and complete other activities. Friendship Community has shown a 65% increase in balance attendance among users, and 90% of those who took the initial balance survey saw improvement in at least 6 months at one of the five test sites – 90% of those who completed the follow-up assessment also reported increased activity levels and happiness.

Building bridges
Construction bridges The category recognized the use of technology to improve communication between staff and residents and their families.
Winner Gold for “Virtual Senior Center, World of Engagement” Virtual Senior Center and Self Help Community Services in New York City.
Selfhelp is a New York-based nonprofit organization dedicated to protecting the independence and dignity of seniors and at-risk populations through a variety of nursing homes, home health care and social services. Through a computer or television screen, users can access the Virtual Senior Center to learn about available resources. Computer lessons are given to those who need them. The platform facilitates remote monitoring and telehealth services and drives new initiatives toward diversity, equity, and inclusion for LGBTQ+ seniors.

Keep it very simple
The simplest class recognizes simple but effective technology applications that improve care, services or operations.
The winner in the category was Westminster Canterbury in Chesapeake Bay, Virginia Beach, FL, for “WCB Geeks: Cyber-Seniors Solving Their Neighbors’ Tech Challenges.”
In the WCB Geeks program, a small but formidable group of residents who are former tech industry executives assist the community’s IT department by helping their residents with complex technology issues. Geeks have set up the community’s Resident Center digital portal for hundreds of residents to find information about activities, dining services and current events in the community. In addition to quickly solving the community’s tech issues and enabling geeks to use their IT skills, the group helps create friendships that might not have developed otherwise.
Other award winners in the Senior Living track’s Keep It Super Simple category:
- Silver: Asbury Communities, Frederick, MD
- Bronze (tie): Brookdale Senior Living, Brentwood, TN and Social Call, Front Porch Community Services, Glendale, CA
The award winners were selected by a 25-member panel of experts; He evaluated the entries for their overall value, impact, relevance, performance and innovation in improving resident care and services.
Two more prizes
Winners of two additional awards, Best in Show and Tech Partner of the Year, were also announced.
of Best in Show The award is selected from all winners in all three competition streams: senior living, skilled nursing and home care.
ConcertoCare’s award-winning proprietary Patient 3D platform won gold in the Building Bridges category of the competition’s Home Care Track.
The software’s goal is to close gaps in patient care. To achieve this goal, the platform helps ConcertoCare teams with three tasks: integrate large amounts of complex data from multiple sources; analyze data to create insights around patient needs; and manage the care delivery workflow and facilitate communication between care teams, patients and caregivers.
of Technology partner of the year The prize was new McKnight’s Technology Awards in 2022.
RecallCue won the award for RecallCue Dementia Clock and Connect.

The second app, RecallCue Connect, allows anyone to communicate with loved ones wherever they are, sending messages and photos, setting alarms and reminders, playing music, sharing files and making two-way video calls.
