These drills are seen by coaches, at least for starters, compared to preseason games. The teams practiced for an hour and 45 minutes, and in the 20-minute game between the Eagles and the Browns, the starters and the second team had a chance to match their counterparts. Great times, great competition, and yes, some talking.
“Yeah, it’s kind of out of character for me not to talk too much here. I let him play the game,” wide receiver AJ Brown said. “It was fun going back and forth. Definitely playing someone else in practice. I’m just a guy who works, bro. I don’t want to talk too much, but it was cool.”
How much do you read in these experiences? They are part of the larger equation and are significant. That’s why it means something for everyone. That’s why the Eagles take these trips so seriously. The quarterback is still redshirted, which means don’t touch it. And there were no “live” seasons, so wrestling was not allowed.
Everything else was pure football and it was a great tournament.
“It’s great out there,” cornerback Avonte Maddox said. “I think we’re getting better at being out here against a great group of players. We all understand what’s at stake. So every day is an opportunity to compete. It’s like today against another team and they’re going to challenge a good team.”
Another day, another step to the 53-man roster, and after that, the regular season. The Eagles brought their A-game to Ohio for these few days and left the practice feeling like they accomplished everything they set out to do.
Friday is a new day and a new challenge and we’ll see how Siriani wants to play in preseason game #2. It will drop to 53 at 4pm on August 30. A sign, a tock. Get ready for day two with the Browns as it’s going fast and both teams are not here for an easy task. They are here to push each other, the kind of work that makes shared experiences so valuable.
“I love it here,” Goedert said. “It felt good to play against a different team. We’ve been pushing each other since OTAs in the spring. Seeing new players, a different team, it was a lot of fun out there.”
